Make more money by doing less? Is it really possible?

A question from Jeremy: What do you mean by making more money by doing less?

I remember my mentee, Dina.  Like most businesswomen, she is a super woman.

super woman

On a typical day, she wakes up at 5 am and sleeps at 12 midnight.  She does marketing, cooks, attends to her husband and kids, does the work of a bodegera, checker, clerk, delivery girl, driver, messenger, purchaser, and bookkeeper. After everyone is already asleep, she still works.

On a bad day, she handles customer complaints, looks for better suppliers, brings the van to the shop for repair, etc.

Every day, she is so busy that she does not have time to reflect and think about her business.  Besides, sleeping 5 hours per day, in the long haul, affects the ability of her brain to be creative. It’s impossible to grow her business without time for planning and strategizing for the long-term.

How can she do less and make more?  Through people.

She does not know it but she is doing the work of at least 5 people.  What she needs a team of people who are:

  • competent,
  • fitted for their job,
  • well trained,
  • motivated and
  • happy in their work.

She needs people who can talk to suppliers, and customers and do the job the way she does.  And, she needs to make sure that all her employees are happy and motivated.
